(Bleacher Report)

Every year, a team uses recruiting to fill in major gaps, build depth and attempt to find that home-run player that can make an instant impact.

While it is always important to try and grab the best recruits at each position every year, the Gamecocks have a few positions the team can live without recruiting in 2012.  These positions are already deep enough and solid enough to make a splash this season without the freshman boost.

Obama: $6 Gas, Don’t Blame Me!

(AP) President Obama does not “accept responsibility” for high gas prices, his spokesman indicated today, arguing that Obama has done everything he could to bring down the price of oil and blaming the high gas prices on oil price increases caused by global factors. “The president accepts the responsibility that he identified the next president should accept, back in 2008, which is the need to develop a comprehensive energy policy,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said today when asked [...]

Jim DeMint: The GOP’s new gold standard

(News OK) Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., may be the elected leader of Senate Republicans but their is little doubt where the press believes the real heart of the conservative movement beats: in Sen. Jim DeMint‘s, R-S.C., office. Just look at the tweet from NBC News‘ Chuck Todd earlier today: Is this a budget that Jim DeMint could support? nyti.ms/yMsqUH // Christie proposes a spending increase but a tax decrease. Treasurer Loftis: Thanks to you!

Thanks to you, we are bringing more transparency and accountability to the state’s $25 billion pension fund. Your visits, calls and emails to the Senate made the difference and I am truly appreciative. Because of your efforts, state Senators overwhelmingly voted by a 34-10 margin to keep the only elected official on the Investment Commission!

That was just the beginning of our transparency efforts. At Thursday’s Investment Commission meeting, the Commission wisely voted to take three weeks to carefully examine the pension fund’s investment allocations. Previously, the fate of $25 billion was decided in one meeting. Taking the time to closely look at where this fund is putting money is at the heart of transparency and accountability.

I would also like to thank my fellow commissioners for voting to examine all strategic partnerships and alternative investments. This review is key to making long term investment decisions that create value for our retirement system.

    Debate tonight big for Romney

(Post & Courier) Mitt Romney will face his three Republican rivals tonight in a debate that marks the start of a crucial week for his presidential bid. Romney badly needs to win the Feb. 28 primary in Michigan, the state where he grew up and his father once governed. A victory there, coupled with a win in the Arizona primary the same day, could give him a strong boost. A Michigan loss for the self-described “son of Detroit” could be [...]

    Free Chocolates Next?

Finally the announcement came from the Ministry of Health: there would be free contraceptives for all women in Workers’ Paradise. No longer the wrenching choice between chips or contraception; proles can have both. The Leader’s Media Ministry, a branch of the Fiction Department, proclaimed the victory for the revolution, which would stop the oppression of women and was a great leap forward for “preventive medicine.” The new aspirin-a-day.

In spite of the Ministry of Health’s generosity, and Obama’s Potemkin prattle that “manufacturing jobs are coming back” and that the economy is turning around, his message was drowned out when the Ministry of Plenty admitted that the Leader’s Four-Year Plan and its generous but failed stimulus of $1.2 trillion had made for the longest period of unemployment since the great depression.

    Boeing To Haley: STFU Already

Several of South Carolina’s most prominent corporate citizens are fed up with Gov. Nikki Haley dragging them into her war with organized labor.

Err … scratch that … they’re tired of Haley dragging them into her frequent rhetorical tirades against what is currently a nonexistent foe.

As part of her stump speech, Haley frequently invokes the names of some of the Palmetto State’s largest and most well-known manufacturers – at which point she states that these companies have served notice to the rest of the nation that “unions are not welcome here.”

Only 3.4 percent of South Carolina’s work force was unionized in 2011 – the second-lowest rate in the entire nation.

Graham: I expect a primary challenge

(McClatchy) WASHINGTON — These days, Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina isn’t deriding town hall hecklers as a bunch of “angry white guys” or branding as losers the conservative activists who criticize him at the S.C. GOP’s convention. Starting his 18th year in Congress, Graham also is not writing New York Times columns with U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., on the dangers of climate change, pitching immigration reform or predicting the demise of the Tea Party. Instead, Graham [...]

Opinion: Senate right not to change panel

    (The Greenville News)

The state Senate wasted valuable time last week when it considered a proposal that would have removed the state treasurer from the South Carolina Retirement System Investment Commission. At least senators saw through what appeared to be a politically motivated reaction to legitimate questions about the retirement system and roundly rejected this idea.

The treasurer is the only elected official on the six-member commission. Other members are appointed by elected officials.

It’s rare indeed when this website praises decisions made by the “Republican-controlled” S.C. General Assembly … or concurs with the judgments of our state’s ivory tower media elites.
